GNV launches two new maritime routes between France and Algeria

The Italian shipping companyGNV, a subsidiary of theMSCgroup, is expanding its network in the Mediterranean by launching two new routes between France and Algeria. In the coming days, it will offer crossings connecting the port of Sète to the Algerian cities of Algiers and Béjaïa, thereby enhancing maritime services between Europe and Algeria.

Founded in 1992, GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) is one of the leading players in maritime transport in the Mediterranean. It currently operates 31 routes across seven countries, including France, Tunisia, Morocco, and Spain, with a fleet of 25 vessels.

For these new routes, the company will deploy theRhapsody, an iconic ship formerly known asNapoléon Bonaparte. Once a flagship of SNCM, it is returning to international service after having long operated routes between Corsica and the mainland.

This development is excellent news for the Algerian diaspora in Europe, particularly in France. Until now, the majority of crossings to Algeria departed fromMarseille, which has often faced criticism for high fares and a lack of reliability. With Sète as a new departure point, these routes provide a more convenient alternative for many travelers from southern and western France.

In addition to alleviating congestion on existing routes, these new maritime paths could boost tourism and foster competition in a strategic market. They also represent an opportunity for the port of Béjaïa, which is often overshadowed by Algiers in terms of maritime services.
