GNV Orion: New Eco-Friendly Ferry for the Mediterranean

A major event took place last night in Genoa, under the splendid Lanterna:GNV (MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company)celebrated the official launch of theGNV Orion, its 26th ferry. This new vessel marks a significant milestone for the company, enhancing its fleet with a state-of-the-art and eco-friendly unit.

TheGNV Orionstands out as one of the most spacious and modern ships in theMediterranean. It boasts high environmental standards, achieving a reduction of over 30% in CO2 emissions per transportable load compared to previous generations. Additionally, it is designed to connect to shore power (known as “cold ironing”), which helps eliminate emissions while docked. This represents a concrete advancement for thesustainability of maritime transport.

The ceremony brought together prominent local and national figures, including the Mayor of Genoa, Silvia Salis, the President of the Liguria Region, Marco Bucci, and the Deputy Minister of Transport, Edoardo Rixi. Leaders from the MSC Group, such as the Executive Chairman of GNV, Pierfrancesco Vago, were also in attendance. Swimmer Federica Pellegrini served as the godmother of this launch.


GNV’s Ambitious Expansion and the Future of Its Fleet

The arrival of theGNV Orionis part of GNV’s strategic expansion plan, strongly supported by the MSC Group. Following the GNV Orion and the previousGNV Polaris, both already operational on routes to and from Sicily, GNV plans to introduce six new LNG-powered vessels by 2030.

Thus, within five years, a significant portion of GNV’s fleet will be completely renewed, increasing its transport capacity by approximately 60%. This major transformation aims to makemaritime transportmore sustainable, innovative, and connected. GNV expresses pride in actively participating in this evolution.
