The maritime sector plays a central role in the strategic vision of the Ministry of Transport in Tunisia leading up to 2040. Within the framework of this vision, it is essential to develop commercial port infrastructure. These ports are crucial in facilitating 98% of trade exchanges. The goal is to enhance their resilience and prepare them to meet energy, ecological, and digital challenges.
Progress at the Port of Bizerte-Menzel Bourguiba
1. Redevelopment of the Commercial Quay
As part of the improvement of the Bizerte port infrastructure, an investment of over 11 million dinars has been allocated for the renovation of the commercial quays. These works, which received provisional acceptance on August 22, 2023, include the installation of new LED lighting and the implementation of a fire-fighting system, thereby enhancing the port’s safety and functionality.
2. Expansion of the “B” Oil Quay
To accommodate large oil tankers, a financial allocation of 70 million dinars has been designated for the expansion of the “B” oil quay. The launch of the tender is scheduled for 2024, demonstrating a commitment to the long-term development of the port.
3. Maintenance of Maritime Tugs
An investment of 5 million dinars has been dedicated to the maintenance of maritime tugs. This initiative aims to improve their operational availability, thereby enhancing the safety of maritime maneuvers.
4. Repair of the Cement Quay
To strengthen the port structure, a total of 2.5 million dinars has been allocated for the repair of the cement quay, ensuring the durability of port facilities.
5. Implementation of an Electronic Surveillance System
A budget of 7 million dinars has been invested in the establishment of an electronic surveillance system for port areas, thus enhancing the overall security of the port and meeting ecological and digital standards.

To facilitate logistical movements, the example of turnstiles has been replaced with a second gate dedicated to commercial traffic, thereby improving the efficiency of port operations.

A comprehensive study on the environmental impacts of the expansion works is awaiting approval. The upcoming issuance of a tender for the expansion works at the ports of Bizerte and Menzel Bourguiba demonstrates a commitment to sustainable growth.
