Algeria Ferries or Nouris El Bahr Ferries: Who Acquired a 46-Year-Old Ship?

The Algerian maritime sector has been bolstered by the addition of a new vessel. One of the two Algerian shipping companies,Algérie FerriesandNouris El Bahr Ferries, has acquired a 46-year-old ferry, the Moby Corse. Owned by the Italian company Moby, this ship was purchased for less than 8 million euros.

According to the specialized website Shipping Italy, after 15 years of service with Moby Lines, the vessel was sold to an Algerian company operating between Spain and Algeria. While the identity of the buyer remains to be confirmed, speculation suggests it is Nouris El Bahr Ferries, a new company set to commence operations very soon.

Nouris El Bahr Ferries, which will begin its operations on the Algiers-Marseille route, has already announced several other maritime connections, including between Alicante and Algiers, Alicante and Oran, as well as Marseille and Bejaïa. The Moby Corse, which is expected to be delivered by the end of this month, will serve these new routes, providing passenger and vehicle transport services between the Spanish and Algerian coasts.

Constructed in 1978 by the Danish shipyard in Aalborg, the Moby Corse has a long history in maritime transport. Originally named Pont L’Abbé, it has been operated by several companies, including Dfds Seaways and Brittany Ferries, before being acquired by the Italian company Moby in 2009. This ferry was primarily used on the Toulon to Bastia route until its recent sale.

Concerns Arise Over the Age of the Moby Corse

Measuring 153 meters in length, with the capacity to transport 400 vehicles and accommodate 1,120 passengers, the Moby Corse has played a significant role in Mediterranean maritime connections. Despite its advanced age, its dimensions and operational capabilities still make it relevant for travel between Europe and North Africa.

However, the age of the Moby Corse raises doubts about its long-term viability. With 46 years of sailing experience, this ferry has already had a full career, prompting concerns about its overall condition. This is particularly relevant given that the Algerian company, Algérie Ferries, had a very negative experience with the Italian firm that chartered the Moby Dada for the summer season. The vessel was found to be in poor condition and exhibited serious technical issues.
