Baleària: Launch of Eco-Responsible Fast Ferry in the Maghreb

Baleàriais making rapid progress in the construction of its new vessel. TheBaleària Mercedes Pinto fast ferryis set to be launched onSeptember 19. This will be the company’s third natural gas ferry. Its launch is scheduled to take place at the Astilleros Armon shipyard in Gijón. The vessel is expected to become operational in 2026, thereby enhancing Baleària’s eco-efficient fleet.


A Modern and Eco-Responsible Vessel

The “Mercedes Pinto” will join its sister ships,Eleanor RooseveltandMargarita Salas. Together, they will operate Baleària’s routes. The ferry, measuring 123 meters in length, will accommodate1,200 passengersand425 vehicles.

This new vessel demonstrates Baleària’s commitment to sustainability. It is equipped with dual natural gas engines that reduce CO2 emissions by over 30%. Additionally, it can operate on 100% biomethane, and a blend with green hydrogen is also possible. Furthermore, the ship is designed to connect to shore power (cold ironing).

TheBaleària Mercedes Pinto fast ferryhas been designed with passenger comfort in mind. It will feature numerous amenities, including two lounge decks with seating. Various cafeterias will be available both indoors and on the terrace. An exclusive area for children is also planned. Finally, the vessel will offer pet-friendly accommodations.

Baleària has chosen to name the ship in honor ofMercedes Pinto, a 20th-century Canarian writer and poet. She is recognized as a pioneer for her ideals of progress, social justice, and civil rights, which were central to her advocacy. Notably, her efforts to modernize divorce law were particularly impactful. With the launch of the Mercedes Pinto, Baleària solidifies its position as a leader in the industry, continuing to invest in innovation aimed at providing more sustainable and comfortable travel options.
