Storm Claudia: Ferries Tarifa-Tanger Completely Halted
Maritime Traffic Interruption between Tarifa and Tanger
The maritime traffic linking Tarifa, in southern Spain, to Tanger, in northern Morocco, has remained suspended for several days due to the storm Claudia. This storm generated strong gusts of wind and agitated sea conditions in the Strait of Gibraltar, as reported by Spanish port authorities.
Africa Morocco Link company canceled all its departures from Tarifa, while Balearia has not yet confirmed the resumption of its crossings for this weekend. This link is particularly popular among Moroccan travelers, students, and cross-border workers, being the fastest between Spain and Morocco.
Extreme Meteorological Conditions
Abandant rains, violent winds, and waves exceeding four meters have forced ports in the province of Cadiz to suspend high-speed ferries since Thursday, according to the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras. The Spanish meteorological agency AEMET maintained yellow alerts for the strait, indicating winds reaching 70 km/h and delicate navigation conditions.
The Algeciras–Tanger Med and Algeciras–Ceuta links continued to operate, albeit slightly delayed, and allowed absorbing part of the blocked passenger and freight traffic at Tarifa.
Impact of Inclement Weather in Andalusia
Local media reported more than 300 incidents related to inclement weather in Andalusia within a 24-hour period. Among these incidents were flooded streets, uprooted trees, and disruptions to transportation. The provinces of Cadiz and Malaga were particularly affected by these extreme climate conditions.
Catamaran services in the Bay of Cadiz, used daily by commuters between Puerto de Santa María, Rota, and Cadiz, have also been suspended for several days. Replacement buses were put in place to maintain connections until the weather improves.
Forecasted Resumption of Crossings
The resumption of crossings was announced for November 17, 2025, in response to improved meteorological conditions.
