Inauguration of Vessels in the Maghreb to Combat Illegal Fishing

Tunisia will inaugurate two surveillance vessels to combat illegal fishing on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the port of Halk El Wadi. These vessels are financed by Japan with an investment of 2.1 billion Japanese yen, equivalent to 25 million Tunisian dinars.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) explained in a statement released on Thursday that the construction of the two floating units was carried out in accordance with national and international standards in the field of fishing, as part of a grant project between the Japanese and Tunisian governments. This initiative aims to provide the necessary resources to the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture to monitor fishing boats in Tunisian waters and enhance the sustainable management of marine fishing resources.

It is worth noting that a trial voyage was scheduled for this occasion, and Tunisia was expected to receive the two vessels by the end of 2023, according to a statement from the agency dated April 2, 2023.

The Tunisian Ambassador to Japan, Mohamed Lamine, visited the headquarters of the Japanese shipping company Kiri, located in Hiroshima, Japan, on January 19, 2023, to oversee the commencement of welding work, a significant milestone in the construction project of the two vessels.
