A NEW CHAPTER OPENS IN GNV DEVELOPMENT
With the delivery today in China of the first of four new mixed vesselsunder construction, the MSC Group ferry company is launching a strategic renewal of its fleet.
The vessel « GNV Polaris » will soon set sail for Italy and is expected to be operational in the Mediterranean byJanuary 2025.
Genoa, October 24, 2024 –GNV, the ferry company of the MSC Group, today celebrated the delivery of GNV Polaris, the first of four new mixed units that will join the fleet by 2026. The ship will soon depart from the shipyard in China to head to Italy, where additional modifications will be made before entering service by January 2025.

Thanks to its technical features, GNV Polaris will enhance the Company’s network, ensuring greater operational flexibility and more efficient management of seasonal peaks, with particular attention to routes to Sicily and Sardinia. This marks a significant milestone in the fleet renewal process, which not only includes expansion with new units but also the restyling and modernization of currently operating vessels, as well as the gradual decommissioning of less efficient units.

The traditional maritime delivery ceremonytook place in the presence of key representatives from the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) and a delegation from the MSC Group and GNV.
“The delivery of this vessel represents an extremely important moment for GNV: it is the first significant step in a fleet modernization project that will see us bring to market in the coming years – through new ships and the restyling of existing ones – a high-quality offering and service that positions us as an operator of excellence in the Mediterranean.”statedGNV CEO Matteo Catani.“It is equally significant to note that, due to its high energy efficiency standards and the ability to utilize cold ironing, this vessel represents a fundamental step for our Company in terms of reducing the environmental impact of our operations and will serve as an accelerator for the sustainable development path we have embarked on and firmly believe in. Because within the MSC Group, of which we are a part, we want to contribute and be involved in reducing the environmental impact of the entire industry.”
The first of the four new ro-pax units, built in China at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), will have a gross tonnage of approximately 46,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, a width of 29.60 meters, and a maximum speed of 25 knots. It will feature 239 cabins and have a capacity for 1,500 passengers and 3,100 linear meters of cargo.
Like the four newly constructed units, GNV Polaris is also equipped with the necessary facilities for cold ironing, which allows for connection to the shore power grid, significantly reducing emissions and improving local air quality and noise levels.
All new vessels will be equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to meet IMO Tier III requirements.

Also onboard are other “energy-saving features” such as: heat recovery technologies through turbo-generators; the use of variable speed drives for optimizing the electrical load of pumps and fans; the implementation of LED lighting throughout the lighting system; optimization of hull shapes, bulbs, propellers, and rudders; and the application of silicone paint on the hull to minimize fuel consumption required for propulsion.
