A promising summer 2025 for Algérie Ferries

As the summer season of 2025 approaches, the national company Algérie Ferries is preparing to enhance its maritime operations to meet the growing needs of travelers. Many Algerians prefer maritime transport during their vacations, and they will soon see an improvement in the availability of crossings. According to information reported by L’Algérie Aujourd’hui, the company has made the strategic decision to charter the ferry El Venizelos, a Greek vessel owned by ANEK Lines, to strengthen its fleet.

A response to increased demand

Every summer, thousands of Algerians take the ferry to return to their homeland, resulting in a significant influx on maritime routes. Aware of the substantial rise in demand for connections between Algeria and various ports in France, Italy, and Spain, Algérie Ferries is adjusting its crossing schedule. The agreement to charter the El Venizelos, set to enter service in June 2025, underscores the company’s commitment to providing a service that is both reliable and efficient. Last year, the company had already expanded its capacity by utilizing the Italian ferry Moby Dada. However, the latter encountered technical issues, leading to cancellations that disappointed many passengers. Building on this experience, Algérie Ferries hopes that the El Venizelos, known for its reliability, will offer an improved travel experience.

A changing fleet and enhanced services

Currently, Algérie Ferries’ fleet consists of four vessels: the Badji Mokhtar 3, the El Djazaïr 2, the Tassili 2, and the Tariq Ibn Ziyad, the latter of which is undergoing renovations. The Minister of Transport, Said Sayoud, announced that the Tariq Ibn Ziyad will be back in service for the summer season, thereby adding extra capacity to the fleet. These developments are crucial for maintaining the company’s competitiveness against other players in the Mediterranean maritime market. The demand for maritime crossings between Algeria and Europe remains high, particularly due to the significant Algerian diaspora, which travels extensively during holiday periods. To meet this demand, Algérie Ferries must continually adjust its offerings in terms of comfort, frequency of crossings, and pricing. To attract more travelers, several promotions are already being considered for the summer season. Special offers may be implemented, providing crossings at competitive rates, not only to encourage tourism to Algeria but also to support the local economy during the summer.

Growing competition and future prospects

Meanwhile, other shipping companies, such as GNV and Corsica Linea, are exploring new routes across the Mediterranean, thereby enhancing regional connectivity. For instance, GNV recently announced the launch of a new line between Genoa and Algiers, thereby increasing options for travelers. The summer season of 2025 is shaping up to be dynamic for the maritime sector in the Maghreb and the Mediterranean. With investments in fleet modernization and ongoing efforts to improve services, shipping companies, including Algérie Ferries, are striving to meet the rising expectations of passengers. Furthermore, increased competition among operators is expected to lead to more attractive fares and improved service quality. This renewal of maritime crossings is beneficial not only for travelers but also plays a key role in the economic development of Algerian ports and the promotion of tourism in Algeria. Maritime authorities, along with transport companies, must continue to collaborate to ensure a travel experience that is both satisfying and secure for all.
