Morocco: Commercial Maritime Traffic Increases by 2.8% in 2023

The total volume of commercial traffic handled by Moroccan ports reached 155.2 million tons by the end of September 2023, compared to 151 million tons during the same period last year, marking an increase of 2.8%, according to the Ministry of Equipment and Water.

Domestic traffic recorded a volume of 81.7 million tons, down 3%, while transshipment reached a volume of 73.5 million tons, reflecting a growth of 10.1% compared to the end of September 2022, the ministry stated in a press release.

The distribution of traffic showed a predominance of transshipment activities, accounting for 47.3% of total traffic, followed by imports (31.7%), exports (16.4%), cabotage (3.7%), and bunkering of hydrocarbons (0.8%), primarily benefiting vessels transiting through the Strait of Gibraltar, the same source reported.

In terms of the main strategic traffic handled by Moroccan ports, the third quarter of 2023 saw an increase in container traffic (7.5 million TEUs/+8.9%), petroleum coke (769 thousand tons/+18.1%), international road transport (376,374 units/+2.5%), and new vehicles (478,496 units/+18.8%). Conversely, there was a decrease in imported hydrocarbons (8.9 million tons/-2.7%), cereals (6.9 million tons/-4.8%), coal (8 million tons/-9.3%), and phosphates and related products (18.4 million tons/-15.9%).

Regarding passenger traffic, the ministry revealed that Moroccan ports recorded 4 million passengers by the end of September 2023, representing a significant increase of 43.9% compared to the same period last year, noting that cruise activity experienced a strong recovery, with a total of 146,818 cruise passengers.

Concerning the volume of landings of coastal and artisanal fishery products by the end of September 2023, it decreased by 16.1% to reach 913,974 tons.
