Morocco Accelerates Its Transportation Transformation for 2030

Morocco is embarking on an ambitious transformation of its transportation infrastructure, with massive investments in the railway, aviation, and maritime sectors. The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, outlined the key aspects of this plan during a meeting with the Infrastructure and Sustainable Development Commission.

Rail Transport: A Revolution Underway

A budget of 53 billion dirhams (MAD) has been allocated to modernize the railway network. This budget includes the construction of a high-speed line between Kenitra and Marrakech, as well as the development of regional lines. Of these funds, 29 billion MAD will be used for the purchase of new trains, and 14 billion MAD will be allocated for the rehabilitation of 40 stations to enhance existing services.

The plan aims to connect 43 cities by 2040, serving 87% of the Moroccan population compared to 51% today. It also includes a railway connection to 12 strategic airports and ports. A key project involves linking the Nador West Med port, with an investment of 4.3 billion MAD and significant progress in construction.

Modernization of Urban Transport

A program of 11 billion MAD aims to modernize urban public transport infrastructure, particularly in preparation for the 2030 World Cup. This project will span from 2025 to 2029, with the goal of improving the quality of life in Moroccan cities through more efficient transportation services.

Expansion of the Aviation Sector

Modernization of Urban Transport

The ministry plans to invest 42 billion MAD in airport infrastructure. Casablanca Airport, the international gateway, will see its capacity increased to 44 million passengers annually. Other projects include the expansion of the airports in Rabat-Salé, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, aimed at opening up remote regions and promoting tourism.

Toward a National Maritime Fleet

A strategic study is underway to establish a Moroccan commercial maritime fleet. This initiative aims to strengthen logistical independence, promote economic exchanges with Africa, and support national sovereignty in maritime transport.

Parliamentary Support and Future Prospects

Parliamentarians have praised these projects while calling for legislative and organizational reforms to enhance competitiveness and address the challenges posed by upcoming major sporting events. They also emphasized the importance of strengthening connections between southern and central regions, as well as improving the public transport network to support economic and social development.

Through these initiatives, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to becoming a regional transportation hub while strengthening its infrastructure for a more sustainable and connected future.
