DFDS Strengthens Its Fleet in the Maghreb with Two New Ferries
The Danish company DFDS is reinforcing its presence in the Mediterranean by announcing the purchase of two vessels from Naviera Armas. This operation, which includes their operating licenses and the integration of 200 employees, confirms DFDS’s intention to establish itself as a major player in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Acquisition to Improve Spain-Morocco Connectivity
The two vessels in question are already well-known in the Strait of Gibraltar:
- The Volcán de Tamasite, a RoPax ferry built in 2004 for the transport of cargo and passengers.
- The Villa de Agaete, a high-speed catamaran that entered service in 1999.
These two ferries currently operate on the key routes Algeciras–Tangier Med and Algeciras–Ceuta. Their acquisition ensures continuity of service for customers, without any interruption. Other employees from Naviera Armas will be integrated by the company Baleària.
A Rapidly Growing Market and Strengthened Teams
According to Mathieu Girardin, Head of the Ferry Division at DFDS, the growth of the ferry market in the strait has exceeded the company’s expectations. He specifies that the goal is to ensure a smooth transition and to immediately improve services for both passengers and freight customers.
Ronny Moriana Glindemann, General Manager of DFDS for the region, added: « We are delighted to welcome our new colleagues from Armas/Trasmediterránea. » This team integration reinforces DFDS’s commitment to providing quality service to its customers.
In parallel with this acquisition, DFDS plans to increase its share in a RoRo ferry already used for freight on the Algeciras–Tangier Med route. This measure aims to meet the strong demand in this strategic maritime corridor.
Finalization of the Operation and DFDS’s Ambition
This operation is subject to the approval of the relevant authorities. Its finalization is expected in the first quarter of 2026. By strengthening its fleet and workforce, DFDS confirms its ambition to become a leader in maritime transport for passengers and freight in the Strait of Gibraltar.
