GNV POLARIS LAUNCHES IN GENOA: INNOVATION AND COMFORT FOR A NEW CONCEPT OF FERRY TRAVEL
In China, GNV Orion is currently completing technical sea trials in preparation for its delivery to the shipowner, scheduled for next spring.
GNV Polaris, the first newly constructed unit by GNV, the ferry company of the MSC Group, was unveiled last night at the port of Genoa. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing fleet renewal plan.
Undoubtedly, passengers and drivers will enjoy an innovative and comfortable travel experience aboard the remarkable GNV Polaris. This gem can accommodate up to 1,500 passengers, features 239 cabins, and has a loading capacity of 3,100 linear meters, making it ideal for managing high-traffic routes such as Genoa-Palermo, which it has been serving since January 7.
“GNV Polaris is not just a ship; it symbolizes our vision. This project represents an investment in the future, aiming to redefine quality and sustainability standards within our fleet and the maritime transport sector,” statedMatteo Catani, CEO of GNV.

He continued:“We offer our passengers a unique travel experience that combines comfort,
innovation, and environmental respect. This is not just about modernizing our offerings; it is about positioning ourselves as pioneers in the Mediterranean in terms of operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact. WithGNVPolaris and the three other units on the way, we are making a significant step forward in our development, confirming our concrete commitment to more sustainable and responsible transport.”
The ship offers a range of services designed to transform the crossing into a pleasant and memorable experience, blending convenience, relaxation, and attention to detail:
- Innovative dining space:from the panoramic charm of the Seaview Lounge, perfect for relaxation, to the Market Place, which offers freshly prepared dishes and cooking shows for an excellent culinary experience.
- Pizza and Steak House:an evolution of the classic Pizza Corner, combining trendy dishes with traditional Italian cuisine using the Verace Pizza Napoletana specification.
- Unmatched hospitality:spaces designed to meet all needs, from digital play areas dedicated to children to pet-friendly zones, with cabins specially designed to ensure maximum comfort for them as well.
- Advanced communication technologies:including a stable and fast Wi-Fi connection that allows passengers to stay connected at all times during the journey. Additionally, with digital displays and braille signage, GNV Polaris offers an inclusive and innovative experience, ensuring effective communication and accessibility.

“With GNV Polaris, we want to send a clear message: every moment of the travel experience onboard holds fundamental value,” notedMatteo Della Valle, Commercial Director of GNV.
“We have paid great attention to defining the services offered. Our clientele is very diverse, and our goal is to grow with them by providing an increasingly modern, unique, and tailored experience, regardless of the reason for travel. We cater not only to passengers traveling for leisure, perhaps to tourist destinations, but also to those using our services for professional reasons, such as freight operators. GNV Polaris represents a step forward for each of them,” he added.
The ship, with a gross tonnage of 46,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, and a width of 29.60 meters, is designed to maximize energy efficiency and service quality onboard.
Cutting-edge environmental technologies include a cold ironing system that significantly reduces emissions in port, along with advanced exhaust gas treatment systems that comply with IMO Tier III standards.
The use of LED lighting and silicone paint on the hull allows for additional energy savings and reduced consumption.

More generally, the new GNV Polaris ship also stands out for its high environmental standards, allowing for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to units currently in the fleet.
During the ship’s maiden voyage from China to Italy, GNV conducted a study in collaboration with RINA to monitor and optimize the energy and environmental performance of the new vessel.

The analysis relied on data collected through SERTICA Performance, a state-of-the-art data analysis software developed by RINA. The results confirmed that the innovative propulsion systems and energy efficiency measures adopted on the GNV Polaris allow for a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, in line with design forecasts.
These results demonstrate that GNV Polaris represents a key step in the modernization process of GNV’s fleet, highlighting the company’s strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
In 2025, the fleet will also welcome a second newly constructed unit: theGNV Orion. In recent days, the ship has been completing technical sea trials, a crucial step before its delivery to the shipowner, expected by spring.
Built at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China, GNV Orion will have a gross tonnage of approximately 52,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, and a width of 29.60 meters, and will be capable of reaching a maximum speed of 25 knots.
GNV Orion is also designed to handle large volumes of traffic, which is why it will be equipped with no less than 433 cabins, nearly twice as many as GNV Polaris, with a transport capacity of 1,785 passengers and 3,100 linear meters for freight. GNV Orion will be deployed on routes to Sicily.
Subsequently, two additional new ships, GNV Virgo and GNV Aurora, the company’s first LNG-powered vessels, will be completed, with deliveries scheduled for 2026.
