Maritime Direct Crossing between Annaba and Tunis: A Promising Project for Algeria and Tunisia

Introduction: A New Breath for Algeria-Tunisia Exchanges

In a context where commercial and human exchanges are paramount, Algeria and Tunisia are considering the creation of a maritime direct crossing between Annaba and Tunis. Announced by the Minister of the Interior, Local Communities, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, this project aims to strengthen ties between these two neighboring nations, both economically and culturally.

A Maritime Link Project in Development

During a plenary session at the People’s National Assembly (APN) on December 16, Saïd Sayoud clarified that this proposal is based on an agreement of principle established with his Tunisian counterpart. The two countries are considering the creation of a mixed company that will facilitate maritime transport via chartered ships.

The Objectives and Feasibility of the Project

The Minister mentioned the establishment of a working group tasked with evaluating the feasibility of this link. Discussions focus on several critical aspects: costs, frequency of crossings, and the type of ships to be mobilized. This initiative is part of a broader dynamic of regional cooperation, aiming to facilitate travel and exchanges between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

A Maritime Project in a Context of Regional Cooperation

Saïd Sayoud also mentioned that another maritime project is under study with the Oman Sultanate, highlighting Algeria’s commitment to strengthening its maritime partnerships within the Maghreb and beyond. This type of cooperation could play a key role in dynamizing commercial and tourist exchanges.

Improvement of National Maritime Fleet

Taking advantage of this announcement, the Minister provided an update on the state of national maritime transport. He indicated that out of the twelve cargo ships planned, ten are already operational, and the remaining two should enter service by the end of January. This increase in capacity aims to improve transportation capabilities, reduce dependence on foreign chartering, and support commercial exchanges, in a context where Algeria seeks to strengthen its logistical sovereignty.

Impact on Algerian Diaspora

Another topic addressed by Saïd Sayoud concerns the administrative services intended for the Algerian community abroad. The Minister confirmed that the project for an online passport application is at a ‘very advanced stage’. This service will, in the first instance, facilitate the renewal of expired passports, before being extended to requests for loss or theft, thus meeting the needs of a diaspora often faced with complex procedures and long waiting times.

Conclusion: Towards a Promising Maritime Future

The creation of a direct maritime link between Annaba and Tunis represents a significant step forward in relations between Algeria and Tunisia. By promotionting economic and cultural exchanges, this project could not only improve connectivity in the Maghreb region but also strengthen Algeria’s position in the maritime field. The next steps in the feasibility study will be crucial to determining the viability of this initiative.
