Containerized Traffic at the Port of Algiers
In terms of containerized traffic, the Port of Algiers experienced a nearly 10% decline in import activity during the first quarter. Conversely, it saw an increase of almost 30% in the number of containers exported during the same period.
The Port of Algiers concluded the first quarter with a volume of 55,955 TEUs for imports. According to the general management of the Algerian Port Company (Epal), this volume represents an 8.6% decrease compared to the first three months of 2022, when it recorded an activity of 64,380 TEUs.
While imports declined during the first quarter, exports, which have been encouraged by the Algerian government in recent years, finally saw significant growth. According to data provided by Epal, exports surged by 28% compared to the same period in 2022. However, the Algerian Port Company has not disclosed the cumulative volume for the first three months of the current year or that of 2022.

During this period, the Port of Algiers recorded a total of 377 ship calls, compared to 329 during the first three months of the previous year, marking an increase of 14.6%.
This growth is primarily attributed to liquid bulk traffic, where the number of tankers increased by 33%, and solid bulk traffic, which also saw a 33% rise in the number of cement carriers during the first quarter. In the container sector, the increase in the number of cellular ship calls was recorded at 16%.
