
Port Activities in Morocco: Q1 2023 Report Shows Slight Increase
The total volume of port activities in Morocco during the first quarter of 2023 reached 48.6 million tons, compared to 48.4 million tons in the same period of the previous year, marking a slight increase of 0.4%. National traffic (excluding passengers) totaled approximately 26.1 million tons, a decrease of 5.1%, while passenger activity recorded a traffic volume of 22.4 million tons, up 7.7% compared to the first quarter of 2022.
Furthermore, passenger activity accounted for a significant share, estimated at 46.2% of the total port traffic volume in the first quarter of 2023, followed by imports at 31.9%, reaching 15.5 million tons (up 6.3%), then exports at 16.9%, totaling 8.2 million tons (up 7.6%). Container traffic accounted for 4.1%, showing a 19% increase with a volume of 2 million tons, and finally, fuel supply for ships increased by 0.8%, reaching 0.4 million tons (2.3%) for vessels transiting through the Strait of Gibraltar.
Regarding the main strategic products at Moroccan ports during the first quarter of 2023, container traffic (2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units / 6.3%) saw an increase, along with coal and coke (2.8 million tons / 7.1%), international road transport (139,183 units / 2.4%), and new vehicles (145,477 units / 19.3%). Conversely, traffic for petroleum products (2.7 million tons / 6.6%) and cereals (1.9 million tons / 12.8%), as well as phosphate and related products (5.4 million tons / 25.5%), experienced a decline.

Finally, the volume of coastal and traditional fish products landed at Moroccan ports during the first quarter of 2023 increased by 8.6%, reaching 210,703 tons.
