The Port of Zarzis is situated in the southeasternmost part of Tunisia, whose diverse economy primarily comprises agricultural activities, fishing and aquaculture, a renowned tourism sector, an emerging industrial fabric, artisanal activities, and various small trades.
The Port of Zarzis facilitates the region’s commercial exchanges, focusing mainly on the export of sea salt and crude oil, as well as the import of white petroleum products.

Overview of Port Traffic:

The Port of Zarzis, located in southeastern Tunisia, primarily handles bulk traffic (hydrocarbons, sea salt, and olive oil) and general cargo.

Geographical Situation:

Position: 33° 33’ N and 11° 07’

Naute Data:

  • APPROACH: via an access channel 125 m wide and 8.4 km long. This channel consists of an initial section of 2 km, oriented towards the exit at 108°N and dredged to -11 m Hydro, followed by a second section of 6.4 km in length, oriented at 78°N and dredged to -11 m Hydro. The channel is marked by a landing buoy and five pairs of illuminated lateral buoys.
  • WAVES: The dominant swell comes from the North to East. In summer, waves can reach up to 1.5 meters.
  • TIDES: Amplitude ranges from 0.3 to 1.1 m.
  • CURRENTS: Weak.
  • DOMINANT WINDS: In winter, from the West; in summer, from the East.

Infrastructure :

Basins:

  • An inner basin constituting the fishing port, a main basin of 35 hectares and 11 m deep; the turning circle is 450 meters.

Berthing Structures:

  • The commercial quay consists of four berths and has a total length of 610 m with an original depth of 11 m Hydro. Its northwestern end is equipped with a 20 m long quay return intended for RoRo vessels.
  • A petroleum dock with a total length of 185 m and a depth of -10 m Hydro.
  • A service quay with a length of 155 m and a depth of -5 m Hydro.

Protection Structures:

  • The Port of Zarzis is protected by a breakwater measuring 1505 m in length; anchored on the eastern jetty of the fishing port and aligned in the same direction, it shelters the port basin from swells coming from the North to East.

Warehouses

  • Two warehouses with areas of 5000 m² and 4000 m².

Road Access:

  • MC 118 leading to Medenine and Gabès.
  • MC 117 leading from Jerba.
  • MC 109 leading to the Libyan border.

Rail Access:

Not available: the SNCFT network ends at Gabès, which is 140 km from Zarzis.
