Baleària launches the first 100% electric ferry line between Spain and Morocco

Baleària is set to transform maritime transport between Europe and Africa. The Spanish company will soon launch the first fully electric ferry line connecting Tarifa to Tangier. This project is based on two 87-meter catamarans, designed by Incat Crowther and constructed at the Astilleros Armon shipyards in Gijón.

These vessels will reach speeds of 26 knots. They will carry up to 800 passengers and 225 vehicles without producing any CO₂ emissions. Their energy capacity will be 11,500 kWh. To ensure safety, diesel backup generators will be available if needed.

The Ferries Will Recharge During Stops

The ferries will recharge during their stops. Tarifa and Tangier will be equipped with 5 MW and 8 MW batteries. An ultra-fast system will allow for a full recharge in 40 minutes using autonomous robotic arms connected via the OPS (Onshore Power System). The total infrastructure will amount to 39 MWh, equivalent to the energy of 765 electric cars.

This corridor will become the fastest and most sustainable link between Europe and Africa, expected to accommodate four million passengers annually. This public-private project aligns with Baleària’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It will also strengthen ties between Morocco and Spain, supporting their joint ambition for the 2030 World Cup.
