Meeting between Tunisia and Italy: Strengthening Cooperation in the Transport Sector

Today, Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the Minister of Transport, Mr. Rabii Al-Majidi, welcomed His Excellency the Ambassador of Italy to Tunisia, Mr. Alessandro PRUNAS, to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between Tunisia and Italy in the transportation sector across all its components.

The Minister of Transport began the meeting by highlighting the historical Tunisian-Italian relations, particularly in the transportation sector and its role in boosting tourism and trade exchanges. He emphasized the need to develop bilateral cooperation in line with the intentions of the leaders of both countries, in the interest of both friendly nations.

The two parties exchanged views on several issues, including mutual recognition of driving licenses, opportunities to strengthen air links between Tunisian and Italian airports, as well as enhancing maritime connections. In this regard, the Minister of Transport presented the advantages of the port of Zarzis in terms of advanced infrastructure linked to the highway network and its readiness to develop passenger and freight movement.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for Mr. Rabii Al-Majidi to present several key projects in the transportation sector, as well as the environmental, energy, and digital challenges that the ministry aims to address in harmony with national sectoral policies. As part of its international commitments, the ministry highlighted its efforts in these areas.

The Ambassador of Italy to Tunisia praised the projects presented by the Minister of Transport, acknowledging their appeal for investment and the establishment of an active partnership that strengthens what has been achieved under the bilateral agreements between the two countries. Mr. Rabii Al-Majidi proposed the realization of a bilateral partnership through a sectoral framework agreement in the field of transportation.
