LNG: Four New Ferries to Strengthen the Maghreb
Grandi Navi Veloci(GNV) and its 25 vessels –including the GNV Spirit– is already one of the largest ferry companies in the world. The company, part of the MSC group, will continue its expansion with the delivery of a new ship at the end of 2024. “This will be the first of a series of four,” explains Tania Carpentier, Managing Director of GNV in France.
The company will then receive a new vessel every six months until mid-2026. Built in China, these new ships “will be very well suited to the specifics of our business, which involve transporting passengers and goods. They will be less polluting, more efficient, and more economical. The last two ships will even be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG),” outlines Tania Carpentier.
Over 2.5 million passengers in 2023
These ships will, of course, need to be filled. “Our goal for 2024 is to focus on service and relationships with travel agencies. This will prepare us for the arrival of these vessels,” says Tania Carpentier. By then, GNV will likely have renewed itstraditional annual operation, “which allows us to recruit new agencies each year.”
Agencies that account for between…
These agencies represent between 50% and 60% of the company’s sales. “That’s why we are very committed to this sales channel. Agencies manage the customer, and we manage our product.” This product attracted over 2.5 million passengers in 2023, including 1.6 million during the summer season alone. The route connecting Sète to Tangier and Nador (Morocco), which accounts for “at least one sale out of two,” is the most dynamic. In total, GNV operates 31 routes across 6 different countries: Albania, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, and France.
“2023 has been a better year than 2022, which was already an improvement over 2019. We can say that GNV is not unhappy,” concludes Tania Carpentier.
