Maritime Transport of Vehicles: French Company CMA-CGM Increases Rates to Algeria
The French shipping company « CMA-CGM » has announced new surcharges on maritime transport rates to Algeria, just one week after already increasing fees for container transport to four Algerian ports.
These new surcharges apply to the transport of private cars, utility vehicles, and small trucks, as well as containers for vehicles, whether loaded or empty, in addition to public works equipment. These increases will affect both import and export operations.

In a statement, CMA-CGM specified that these rate changes will take effect from October 1, 2024. This decision comes in response to rising fuel prices, which prompted the company to revise its fuel surcharges. Consequently, the Roro South transport services connecting France to Algeria and North Africa will see their rates adjusted for both import and export.
Regarding the new rates, shipping containers loaded with vehicles and trucks to Algeria will now cost1,147 euros per unit. For empty containers, the price will be 722 euros. Additionally, the transport of private cars and small trucks will be charged at247 euros per vehicle, while consolidated cargo that can be divided during unloading (Breakbulk) will cost 70 euros per cubic meter.

Public works equipment and materials, such as wheeled machinery, tracked vehicles, and livestock transport trucks, will be charged at 149 euros per linear meter. However, the company did not specify whether these new rates will apply to all imports, whether from individuals or businesses.
Furthermore, on September 6, 2024, CMA-CGM also introduced a surcharge of 150 euros for each 20-foot container due to congestion at the ports of Algiers, Oran, Skikda, and Bejaïa, a measure that coincides with the upcoming Algerian presidential elections and ongoing port reforms.
