Morocco: Digitalization of Port Payments for Trade

This marks a significant turning point for the foreign trade community in Morocco, set to take place on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Indeed, MSC Morocco has announced that electronic payment for its invoices—covering Imports, Exports, and Demurrage—will be conducted exclusively through PortNet, eliminating the need to visit the shipping company’s offices. MSC Morocco thus becomes, after Customs and the ANP, the first private operator to fully digitize its customer experience.

This new digital revolution in foreign trade is the result of intense collaboration between two heavyweights in the sector, PORTNET and MSC Morocco, who have joined forces to provide digital solutions that can green the process and significantly reduce port passage costs.

This landmark measure will greatly enhance the logistical competitiveness of the Kingdom, a goal long advocated by various economic operators in foreign trade and their professional associations, notably CGEM, ASMEX, and the OEA Club.

The Electronic Payment Service for Import and Export Invoices from MSC Morocco

The electronic payment service for import and export invoices from MSC Morocco via the PORTNET platform already enables the digital generation and transmission of delivery orders. With the extension of this service to include payment for demurrage invoices, a new milestone has been reached in the complete digitization of foreign trade operations.

This new service will facilitate, streamline, and accelerate procedures, as well as reduce the duration of goods’ stay at the port and associated demurrage costs. Economic operators stand to benefit significantly from this service, which will translate into considerable time savings and, consequently, a reduction in costs related to the retrieval of goods.

Economic operators will now be able to electronically generate their delivery orders, manage their demurrage, and retrieve their goods more swiftly.

By implementing the complete digitization of its customer experience through PORTNET, MSC Morocco initiates a true disruption in the customer relationship model, putting pressure on other shipping companies to follow suit. Otherwise, they risk being accused of dragging their feet on an issue of great importance to the Kingdom.
