Strengthened Cooperation Between Tunisia and the African Development Bank in Transportation

The Minister of Transport, Mr. Rabii Al-Majidi, welcomed today, Thursday, February 29, 2024, a delegation from the African Development Bank, led by Mr. Joseph Kouassi NGUESSAN, head of the Infrastructure Department for North and Central Africa. The discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation in the transport sector, including land, maritime, and air transport.

In assessing the cooperative relations between Tunisia and the African Development Bank, Mr. Rabii Al-Majidi presented the strategic vision for the transport and logistics sector in Tunisia looking ahead to 2040. This vision aims to establish a value-added, sustainable, green, clean, safe, and healthy mobility system, in alignment with various national sectoral strategies such as ecology, energy, and digitalization. He emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to its relevant international obligations in this regard.

In the same context, the minister reviewed ongoing, under-construction, and planned projects, particularly those related to rail transport, which he considers essential for achieving the objectives of the strategic vision for the transport and logistics sector. This includes enhancing the offerings in collective public transport, adopting electric rail transport, especially for urban mobility, and securing the transportation of goods within the value chain and multimodal transport. He also highlighted the need to strengthen the connection between northern and southern Tunisia, as well as with neighboring Algeria and Libya, through a high-performance railway line, in addition to attractive investment projects in civil airport infrastructure and commercial maritime ports.

The Minister of Transport also emphasized the ministry’s direction towards strengthening ties between Tunisia and African countries by enhancing the network of air routes, particularly as a transit point to the Mediterranean and the north. He praised Tunisia’s relevant experience in the transport sector and its role in realizing numerous infrastructure projects in several friendly African countries.

For its part, the delegation representing the African Development Bank expressed its willingness to support Tunisia in implementing its transport infrastructure projects. It underscored the opportunities for cooperation and partnership between the public and private sectors, as well as a platform for exchanging experiences during the 16th African Investment Forum scheduled for December 2024.
