Tanger Med Ranks Among the Top 20 Global Container Ports

The Tanger Med port achieved record figures in 2023, a year in which it successfully established its dominance in the Mediterranean and entered the Top 20 of the world’s container ports.

Tanger Med ranks 19th in this classification established by the French firm Alphaliner. With a 13.4% increase in container volumes processed compared to 2022, the Moroccan port has recorded one of the best growth rates in the ranking. Over the past five years, traffic at Tanger Med has more than doubled, making it a serious competitor to the ports of Long Beach (California, USA), Laem Chabang (Thailand), and Kaohsiung (Taiwan), as reported by the newspaperLe Monde, which added that « the results from the beginning of this year further encourage optimism. »

As The Main Transshipment Hub For Goods Coming From…

As the main transshipment hub for goods coming from China, the Moroccan port has also managed to benefit from the recent upheavals in the Red Sea, caused by attacks from Houthi rebels in support of Palestine. An increase of 10% in overall tonnage handled is expected in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, Rachid Houari, Deputy Director General of the port authority, told the French daily, noting that this growth is « slightly above what the port usually experiences. »

Tanger Med « seems to have a head start over its competitors, » analyzes Peter Sand, Chief Analyst at the Norwegian firm Xeneta. Similarly, Jérôme de Ricqlès, a maritime expert with the French startup Upply, asserts that the port complex « is outperforming and benefiting in the current context. » According to maritime specialist Najib Cherfaoui, the competitiveness of Tanger Med port relies not only on « its location at the Strait of Gibraltar and its industrial hinterland of 1,300 companies, » but also on a cheap local workforce.

The labor costs at Tanger Med are ten times lower than those at its competitor port in Algeciras, Spain, representing a significant opportunity for major global shipping companies such as the French CMA-CGM, the Swiss MSC acquired in 2022 by African groups from Bolloré, and the Danish Maersk. Since its inauguration in 2007 by King Mohammed VI, Tanger Med has been working to position itself as a leader in the Mediterranean. The port is operating at 95% of its operational capacity and is considering expansion to compete with its direct rivals, Algeciras and Valencia.
