Maritime Maintenance Strategy in Tunisia: Strengthened Fleet
Planning and Maintenance of Maritime Units
On November 8, 2023, under the supervision of the General Director of Tunisia Maritime, an internal meeting was held to discuss the strategy for the rehabilitation, maintenance, and monitoring of the maritime fleet across various commercial ports. This includes maritime towing vessels, pilot boats, and preparations for the reception of six new tugboats within the next 18 months.
Preventive Maintenance and Safety Equipment
The highlights of this meeting included the implementation of periodic maintenance programs, the completion of technical stops for towing vessels and pilot boats, the regulation of internal procedures for executing these programs, and the enhancement of floating units with safety, communication, and firefighting equipment. The tugboats will also be equipped with electric generators and air compressors to ensure their mobility and the provision of port services in accordance with Tunisia Maritime’s commitments.
Modernization of Vessels and Long-Term Planning
The session also addressed Tunisia Maritime’s program to equip six pilot boats with new engines, the acquisition of two new vessels for the ports of Halq al-Wadi and Bizerte, the regulation of tractor usage indices, and the ongoing reclassification of all floating units by Tunisia Maritime, with a technical maintenance program extending until 2030.
Enhancing Human Skills
Part of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing the training program aimed at enhancing the skills of the crew members, including deck officers, mechanics, and tugboat crews. This ensures optimal preparation for the efficient use of the new acquisitions, which feature advanced technical specifications in line with international standards, particularly the ASD-type propulsion system.
