GNV Virgo: LNG Revolution in the Maghreb for a Green Fleet
The GNV Virgo is part of an ambitious renewal plan, with the anticipated arrival of additional LNG-powered vessels, including the GNV Aurora in a few months. By 2030, the company plans to receive four new units while exploring long-term solutions such as bio-LNG.
The first supply of bio-LNG for the GNV Virgo enabled it to travel from Genoa to Palermo, utilizing fuel derived from biomass, which contributes to a more sustainable carbon cycle. This ambitious plan represents an investment of over 1.2 billion euros and is expected to increase the fleet’s tonnage by 60% within five years.
Economic Impact and Territorial Development
The ferry serves as a true engine of development for the regions, having a significant economic impact. GNV’s activities generate more than 1.5 billion euros annually for the Italian economy, and the number of passengers, projected to reach 2.5 million by 2025, makes a substantial contribution to the tourism sector.
The port of Palermo plays a central role in GNV’s operations, handling over 750,000 passengers and 1.7 million linear meters of freight each year. These figures underscore Sicily’s strategic importance within the GNV network, highlighting the need for port development to support this growth.
